Adoption of course materials | Marshal’s office

Dear colleagues,

The Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission, in response to HB 2919, now requires all colleges and universities in Oregon to post required course materials and associated costs on the college bookstore website at the time of student registration. The purpose of this post is to let you know about these upcoming changes so you can start planning for them. Reporting deadline of April 4, 2022.

Right now, teachers can already adopt course materials through the Duck Store’s VerbaCollect platform, but only 30% of teachers are currently doing so. Adopting the material before enrollment gives students the time to find low-cost options, seek financial support, and budget for that cost in advance. This new requirement is also a key element of the OU’s textbook affordability strategic plan.

The legislation specifically calls for institutions to work with their respective university bookstores to provide information on the costs of course materials to students. Since 1920, the University of Oregon Bookstore, known as The Duck Store, has been an independent, not-for-profit organization owned and operated by the students, faculty, and staff of the university. It fulfills its mission of serving UO students through reduced prices on textbooks, student employment, and support for UO programs and initiatives. The Duck Store is a long-time advocate and partner of textbook accessibility and, most importantly, has the platform and expertise to help UO meet this new legislative requirement by collecting information about any required course material and connecting it to the relevant pricing data. .

For the Fall 2022 class schedule, which will be released on April 29, 2022, all professors will need to adopt the course material at the Duck Store or indicate that no materials are required for their course by April 4. April 2022. Teachers can start adopting Fall 2022 material on March 16, 2022. Classes must have a CRN for adoptions to be submitted through VerbaCollect.

Adopting the material before this deadline is essential to meet legislative requirements and provide sufficient time for the Duck Store to source the low cost options for students, including the digital eBook options. Once the price of the material is established, the registrar’s office will indicate the low cost ($ 50 or less) and no charge courses on the course schedule.

We recognize that many faculty are already finding ways to provide low-cost, no-cost options to students to help increase the affordability of textbooks – thank you for your commitment to supporting your students. To this end, the Duck Store will also provide free adoption methods to their platform, such as Canvas readings, Library eBooks, Open Educational Resources (OER), and No manual required.

Additional posts will be shared during the winter term with specific instructions on how to adopt your material or how to indicate that you have no material, which materials and courses are excluded from the new requirement and how you can. ask for help.
