Be a model of development yourself. Since my youth I have been a voracious reader and had a powerful motivation to learn more about the world by engaging and observing others. This insatiable appetite for learning and questioning has been a constant feature of my own development. I have also found that listening especially to those who see the world differently from you has enormous benefits. This hard-to-develop skill has been a boon, especially in my work of developing talent across borders and languages. Speaking of languages, learn to speak the franchise language fluently and be able to apply it skillfully in your work. With careful listening and the masterful use of empathy, openness is a powerful tool for development. My final tip would be to develop good research skills and the ability to analyze the quality of the research you use in your interventions: it is important to use talent development approaches based on good science and best practice. .

The most valuable thing you have acquired or experienced during your ATD membership?

When I entered the field of learning project management, I only had my degree in political science and history and I was finishing my master’s degree in international studies: it was far from an ideal preparation for managing and design learning programs. My ATD Miami local was very active and I learned a lot from the monthly presentations, many of which gave me practical tools and activities to apply in my own work. I also devoured articles from TD magazine and used the articles to acquire other sources to deepen my understanding of learning and development. Finally, national ATD conventions have also been a great way to boost hands-on learning. This support from ATD, along with amazing and caring mentors, has greatly enriched my journey as a talent development professional.
