This year’s Fantastic Book Awards will be launched online today (Wednesday, September 29) by award-winning author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

Frank’s books have been shortlisted for numerous awards, including the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, the Whitbread Children’s Fiction Award, and the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. Millions, her first children’s novel, won the CILIP Carnegie Medal and was later adapted for screen by film, television and theater director and producer Danny Boyle.

At this year’s launch, young readers will receive a special digital reading message from Frank, who is a strong advocate of reading for fun.

170 primary schools are invited to attend the official launch of the Book Prizes, developed by the Lancashire School Library Service. The 30 books chosen for children to read will be unveiled at the launch.

These awards run until May 2022. They will involve thousands of Lancashire primary school children reading and discussing books and voting for their favorites.

The five winning titles of the Fantastic Book Awards will be announced on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

The main objective of the prizes is to support children aged nine to eleven in reading for fun by introducing them to recently published fictional titles and encouraging them to read and discuss the books.

County Councilor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council Cabinet Member for Community and Cultural Services, said: “I am delighted that this great initiative to encourage young readers is now up and running. I am very supportive of it.

“We are fully committed to maintaining high literacy levels and standards here in Lancashire, and this is an important way to achieve that. I’ll take a keen interest to see who won next May.

Elementary schools will receive a signed copy of Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s new novel, Noah’s Gold, for their participation.
